SMED METHOD
Quick Changeover
Objectives
- Reducemachine Changeover (set up) time
- Reduce lost time and improve machine utilisation
- Reduce batch sizes
- Small batches = smaller production inventory =higher flexibility of production
Contents
- 1Changeover time measured from the last good piece of Product A to the first good piece of new product B
- 2The SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die) method aims to optimise the exchange process, to standardise it and spread the optimised procedure
- 3Internal activities are activities during changeover that are performed when the machine is stopped (e.g. form exchange, tool location, setting of operating parameters)
- 4External activities are changeover activities performed during the machine’s operation (e.g. form preparation, documentation study, material exchange)
